Famille Hugel

We had a lovely wine-tasting at Hugel in their very nice tasting room below the shop. A very friendly hostess who let us taste wines across most of the range of Hugel's wines. Great experience. Only suggestion could be to say a little bit more about the vineyards/terroir and production. But hey, it's free!

Our server was so engaging, informative, and helpful. We tasted a wide variety of wines, some of them quite rare and expensive. Totally enjoyable and delightful!

This was our third tasting on our second day in Alsace. We were given a warm welcome and seated in the very nice tasting room. We were served by a delightful young lady and went through a tasting of 8 wines: 1. Gentil 2022 - emblematic of the Hugel estate and a really good blend of all the Alsace white varieties - 'Alsace in a glass'! - excellent wine and great value 2. Pinot Noir 2014 - 'Grosse Laue' (Grand Cru in Alsace dialect) - clearly a fine wine, but a little tart for our palates 3. Riesling Classic 2023 - citrus/brioche/floral in character - a reasonable entry level Riesling 4. Riesling 2014 Grosse Laue - pure petrol! Power & Spice - peppery - a really good drink 5. Pinot Gris 'Estate' 2021 - a pure expression of the terroir - really excellent - perfect risotto wine! 6. Pinot Gris VT 2009 - delicious but perhaps a bit one dimensional 7. Gewurtztraminer VT 2015 - again delicious but a bit straightforward 8. Pinot Gris 2000 SGN. Pure caramel. 199g sugar!! Fantastic wine, but.....130 Euros per bottle.All in all an excellent tasting - we didn't buy any bottles as we have already filled our allowance, but the standout wine for me was the Pinot Gris Estate 2021.

We enjoyed the wine tasting very much. Mr Hugel gave us a better understanding of Alsace wines and his family’s traditional way of producing wine. The wines had great body and finished very well.

Excellents vins! Nous avons eu un très bel accueil et nous en avons appris beaucoup sur le domaine et leurs vins. J’y retournerais n’importe quand!
